Events

Most regular late night events are run by College Junior Common Room Committees in the campus bars; however the union provides support to individual college Entertainments reps, through providing training, health and safety advice, and acts as a representative to university Catering and Bar Management, as well as to other venues in York city. The Union runs Late License events in The Courtyard on a Saturday night; and organises a variety of cross Campus events including the Freshers and Graduation Balls.

Welfare

The Union provides an individual casework service, as well as running campaigns on specific issues such as sexual health or academic integrity. It also provides a free late night minibus services called "The Magic Bus".[3]

Student Action and RAG

The Union runs various "Student Action" projects which aim to provide student development, while giving something back to the local community. One of the major project it runs is an annual 'Kids Camp' which is a residential holiday for Underprivileged children, staffed by volunteers.[4]

York Sport

The Union funds and supports a number of sports clubs, which compete with other universities in leagues such as BUCS. It also organizes the annual Roses Tournament which takes place against Lancaster University.

Sabbatical officers

The Union's current sabbatical officer team consists of[1]

President Tim Ellis
Welfare officer Robert Hughes
Academic affairs officer Graeme Osborn
Student activities officer James Croydon
York Sport president Sam Asfahani

Robert Hughes

Born in London, Hughes grew up in the Thornton Heath district of the London Borough of Croydon. He graduated in 2011 with a BA in English.

Whilst a student at the University of York, Hughes became involved in numerous welfare and equality-focused student committees,[5] achieving election in 2009 as Vice-Chair of James College JCRC with responsibility for welfare. In January 2010 Hughes, as Vice-Chair (Welfare), spoke out against a controversial "Bad Taste" party planned by James College JCRC.[6] Hughes has also served as a National Union of Students LGBT Delegate, representing the University of York.

In 2011, Hughes successfully sought election to the sabbatical position of YUSU Welfare Officer,[7] defeating incumbent Laura Borisovaite with a communication-based campaign focusing on sexual and mental health.[5][8] Hughes began his one year term in this position in July 2011 and continues to hold the post, representing a student body of almost 13,500.[9]
